Our range of services for 11+ preparation

Helping to ensure your child passes the 11+ entrance exam. On the actual exam day, children will sit a verbal and a non verbal paper (in that order) and then their verbal score and their non verbal score will be standardised and used to assess whether they have passed or not.  The tests for Ripon Grammar School are in a multiple choice format and are based on the GL assessment.

In September 2015 we ran our first Familiarisation Day.  This has now become a regular event on the Chatterton Tuition calendar although we now call this our Super Mock Morning.  Attendance is open to everyone regardless of whether they have tuition with us.  Booking is essential.

For 2023 – the Super Mock Morning  is Friday 1st September.  We always use our own unique papers, which are tailored to match the real 11+ papers for Ripon Grammar entry.

About the Ripon Grammar Entrance Test

What is the date in 2022?

The date is still to be advised at Ripon Grammar School however it is likely to be 10th or 11th September.  Those from out of catchment usually sit the exam in the large sports hall.  Those children who go to primary schools within catchment usually sit the exams with others from their primary school in a smaller classroom.

Results letters are usually posted out to families by post around the middle of October.

What is non-verbal reasoning?

Non-verbal reasoning questions are designed to test a child’s ability to recognise patterns, similarities, and analogies in unfamiliar concepts. They are required to make sense of new information and to apply that information. It gives an indication to the school of how well the child will master new materials and concepts in later school life.

What is verbal reasoning?

Verbal reasoning questions are designed to test a child’s verbal skills. The child will need to demonstrate their ability and understanding of the rules of language. The child will need to be able to identify pattern, similarity and difference between words. These tests are useful as an indication to the school of the potential of the child to learn in later school life.

Applying to the local authority

If you live out of catchment, or your child attends a school out of catchment, then you must make sure you apply for them to sit the 11+ exam. The date you need to apply by is generally mid August (actual date will be posted as and when we know). You need to apply in writing or by email to Harrogate Borough Council, or through the North Yorkshire County Council website.

See what people say

Our son felt relaxed going into the mock exams and access to the practice papers was really useful for his revision. The feedback from Sara was clear and helpful. Highly recommend Chatterton tuition for 11+ preparation

Danni, 2024

I am impressed with Jane and Finlay who are both tutors at Chatterton Tuition. David was well supported by both of them, identified his area of weakness and helped him to develop the necessary skills to succeed at the 11plus and independent schools assessments. I am proud to say he got offers in all three schools he applied to and even won an academic scholarship in one of the schools. Thank you!

Miranda, 2023

We are very grateful to Sara and the team for the tuition and support they have given our son in preparation for the 11+ exam. We have found it to be a very professional and highly competent tuition service and our son has learned a lot from all the tutors he has come in to contact with. We’d like to give a special mention to Toby, who he had weekly classes with throughout the year. He was patient, caring, energetic and enthusiastic - a real credit to the team.

Anca, 2023

They were amazing from start to finish. My daughter did 11+tuition with Jane and she was great. The mock exam were also fantastic and there was alway support throughout the process.

Hugh, 2023

The 11+ mocks and super mock provided by Chatterton were crucial in preparing both our children for passing their 11+. The support and feedback provided by Sara and the team was excellent. I would recommend Chatterton to anyone considering the 11+ for their child.

Rebecca, 2023

We contacted Chatterton Tuition quite late relative to when others start to prep for the 11+; April. I had a really great, productive conversation on the phone with Sara and took our daughter for an initial session to see if there was enough time to get her to the standard needed to pass. It went so well, from the off I got such a sense of comfort and assurance and even better; our daughter came away full of enthusiasm and energy. This mood never changed, every time I arrived to collect her she was happy and felt empowered and inspired. We honestly could not have asked for a better experience, Sara was available when we needed her and was accommodating with her approach to teaching, easily able to switch to remote sessions while we were on holiday during the summer. Practice papers were provided and areas of focus were given every week. Reflecting on our time working with Chatterton Tuition I think the biggest differentiator from how tuition of any kind is provided for children was how child centric Sara made it, the parents opinions were valued, of course, but the whole process was about the relationship fostered with our daughter, the feedback she gave in her own way to Sara and the conversations they had. This is what dictated the pace of learning and ultimately resulted in a successful outcome. I mentioned how our daughter came away brimming with confidence earlier, I also never had a moment through the whole process where I was in any doubt that she was in the very best hands; I have the utmost confidence in the style of teaching and their ability to achieve an outcome. I will not hesitate to recommend Chatterton Tuition to anyone seeking a kind, supportive, nurturing learning environment.
