Our range of services for 11+ preparation

Helping to ensure your child passes the 11+ entrance exam. On the actual exam day, children will sit a verbal and a non verbal paper (in that order) and then their verbal score and their non verbal score will be standardised and used to assess whether they have passed or not.  The tests for Ripon Grammar School are in a multiple choice format and are based on the GL assessment.

In September 2015 we ran our first Familiarisation Day.  This has now become a regular event on the Chatterton Tuition calendar although we now call this our Super Mock Morning.  Attendance is open to everyone regardless of whether they have tuition with us.  Booking is essential.

For 2023 – the Super Mock Morning  is Friday 1st September.  We always use our own unique papers, which are tailored to match the real 11+ papers for Ripon Grammar entry.

About the Ripon Grammar Entrance Test

What is the date in 2022?

The date is still to be advised at Ripon Grammar School however it is likely to be 10th or 11th September.  Those from out of catchment usually sit the exam in the large sports hall.  Those children who go to primary schools within catchment usually sit the exams with others from their primary school in a smaller classroom.

Results letters are usually posted out to families by post around the middle of October.

What is non-verbal reasoning?

Non-verbal reasoning questions are designed to test a child’s ability to recognise patterns, similarities, and analogies in unfamiliar concepts. They are required to make sense of new information and to apply that information. It gives an indication to the school of how well the child will master new materials and concepts in later school life.

What is verbal reasoning?

Verbal reasoning questions are designed to test a child’s verbal skills. The child will need to demonstrate their ability and understanding of the rules of language. The child will need to be able to identify pattern, similarity and difference between words. These tests are useful as an indication to the school of the potential of the child to learn in later school life.

Applying to the local authority

If you live out of catchment, or your child attends a school out of catchment, then you must make sure you apply for them to sit the 11+ exam. The date you need to apply by is generally mid August (actual date will be posted as and when we know). You need to apply in writing or by email to Harrogate Borough Council, or through the North Yorkshire County Council website.

See what people say

Both my son and daughter used the tutors at Chatterton Tuition to help with their 11+ entrance exam and both passed. We continue to use Chatterton Tuition to help with revision and to top up any subjects the children feel they need extra help with. My son who is now in his GCSE year is doing both the maths and science group session and he actually is actually happy to do these classes as he knows the revision is spread out over the year rather than crammed in to the last few weeks. My thoughts are that every lesson could be one or two extra marks and this would add up to achieving one or two higher grades in his GCSE. I constantly recommend them to friends.

Cat, 2019

Sara was incredibly patient with my daughter whilst at the same time focusing on the critical questions on which she needed to improve. I would highly recommend their services. My daughter passed her 11 plus and prior to meeting Sara this was not a dead cert.

Emma, 2019

Abi was first tutored by Sara towards the end of primary school when the 11+ was looming large so it was without hesitation that we turned to her again when Abi's confidence in Mathematics needed a boost. Sara tutored Abi on a 1:1 basis and kept the sessions fairly fluid depending on areas of need each fortnight. Abi's confidence grows palbably during periods of tuition with Sara and this is a testament to the way in which Chatterton tuition cares about helping the pupils in their charge. Abi has just been awarded GCSE Grade 8 for maths and 7 for further maths - it's really hard to see how we could recommend anyone other than Chatterton Tuition!

Giles, 2020

My daughter also attended some group classroom sessions with mock exams with proved invaluable to put my daughter at ease in what can be a stressful time for your child. I can highly recommend Chatterton Tuition. Thank You Phil and Sara.
